The Red Piano Art Gallery, Hilton Head Island's top gallery for over fifty years, was founded in July 1969 after the first Heritage Golf Classic. Created by Alan and Mary Palmer, avid collectors and jazz enthusiasts, the gallery blended their passions.

Alan, a former Coca-Cola illustrator and saxophonist, helped create a lively atmosphere with works by artists like Ralph Ballentine and Joe Bowler. The gallery's iconic red piano, symbolizing jazz, was central to its events. In its early days, the gallery struggled with sales, leading the Palmers to jokingly call it the "piano in the red."

The Art League of Hilton Head is the sole 501(c)(3) nonprofit visual arts organization on Hilton Head. They offer both a dynamic art gallery and a comprehensive teaching Academy. The Gullah people are known for preserving more of their African linguistic and cultural heritage than any other African-American community in the United States. Their language is a creole English with many African words and strong African influences in its grammar and structure.
